Course in Disability First Aid

10735NAT

The challenges that carers, family and health care workers face when administering first aid to a person with a disability in an emergency situation, can be different and more complex than people without a disability This can made even more difficult when the situation requires an immediate response and limited information or/contact is available. By understanding the basics of a person’s disability and knowing what to do in an emergency situation (based on medical advice), you can gain valuable knowledge and skills which may enable you to save person’s life. The following course aims to give you the confidence and ability to assist a person with a disability when it really matters. This course will give you information and practical skills on Disability First Aid treatments.

Course in Disability First Aid

11270NAT

This course is an extension of HLTAID011 Provide first aid. It equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to modify their approach if required to provide effective first aid to a person with a disability affecting their body systems and/or mobility, e.g. a person who is in a bed or wheelchair.

In many instances the response to be provided to a person with a disability is the same as that provided to able-bodied persons, such as in the case of anaphylaxis or allergic reaction, for example. However, some first aid situations require the application of modified first response techniques, for example, responding to a person who is in a bed or wheelchair who is seizing or choking.

This course provides skills and knowledge to apply modified techniques where the first aid response differs between able-bodied and a person with a disability. In addition, it includes the ability to recognise and report that a patient may be severely depressed or suicidal.
